Science has suffered such a serious decline in the classroom that there have been warnings
that Britain is at risk of becoming a Third World nation unless more is done to engage young
people and address the shortage of students taking up science and engineering.
Edge into Space is an exciting opportunity for 13 to 17 year old students to invent new ideas
for products that can be used or developed in space to inspire them to become involved in
science and engineering.
Edge into Space is organised by ISSET, the International Space School Educational Trust,
and supported by Edge, a charity foundation which fosters practical learning. The aim is to
help stem the decline in the uptake of careers in science, engineering and technology.
Students involved in the project will be encouraged to seek support from their school, and
local industry and businesses.
The competition final will include students from all over the United Kingdom, which will provide a wealth
of national and regional stories. The winning team from each region will spend two weeks in
America in the summer of 2006 meeting astronauts and working with scientists at NASA’s
space centres.
